Learning about how to release a CD

Added on Thursday 13 Nov 2008

Over the last few weeks I've been finding out that I know very little about what I need to know to release a CD.

Would you like a barcode with that CD sir? Ehh I guess so - but barcodes for America/Canada and the UK seem to be different - do I need just one or both?

And have you joined the PRS and registered all your songs, sir? Ok done the registration bit - but found the website the most confusing I've ever visited - and can't figure out exactly what I need to do on it - and the 'help' is no help.

Don't forget you need to look at MCPS? Ehh, haven't figured that out yet, everyone I speak to says something different about whether I need to join. I phoned the helpline and they say I don't need to join - but when I look at CD duplication websites they state that they won't copy my CD unless I have a MCPS license number?????

If you don't know what MCPS or PRS stands for, you won't be able to find out by visiting their website. Have a look and get back to me if I'm wrong: http://www.mcps-prs-alliance.co.uk.

Last night I signed up for the CD Baby website (http://cdbaby.net/):

"For a simple $35 setup, CD Baby can get your music selling worldwide on cdbaby.com, Apple iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, Amazon MP3, and many more."

Sounds good to me. I'll tell you how I get on once I've got the CD out and sent them a few to sell.

I do have some good news though, and that is that I now have a master CD with all the songs on it - ready to go. Geoff Martyn dropped it off last night - with all the songs in the right order - and all sounding great.

All the best, Jim
